The Russian Orthodox Church may open the 1st convent in Africa in Kenya, RIA Novosti reports. The head of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa, Metropolitan Leonid of Klin, hopes that a nun, who is now undergoing monastic practice in the Russian capital, will be able to take the post of abbess.

Earlier, Abigail Jepchirchir, the daughter of the dean in the Nandi district of Kenya, Priest Titus, was admitted to the Mother of God-Nativity Convent. At the beginning of the year, she was tonsured and became the first nun in the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa.

Nun Matrona will become the first black Russian abbess, the clergyman hopes.

The presence of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) on the continent spread within a year after the Patriarchal Exarchate in Africa was established. The work continues, there are initiative groups even where there have never been churches. The Metropolitan is confident that it will be possible to "cover almost the entire African continent and ensure the full presence of the ROC."
