Washington Capitals winger Alexander Ovechkin became the first Russian to be in the top-10 snipers in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL). Saturday's hat-trick allowed Ovechkin to catch up with Canadian Steve Yzerman, who is in ninth place of the list. At the moment both of them have scored 692 goals, TASS reports.

Three goals of the Russian winger in the game against the New York Islanders allowed his team to score 6:4 win. Washington Capitals lost three goals to the rivals, but Ovechkin’s two goals in the last period brought victory to his team. Russian goalkeeper Ilya Samsonov also contributed to the victory.

Ovechkin made an impressive leap into the top-10 by scoring eight goals in three games. During the game against the Islanders, the Russian left behind the legendary Canadian Mario Lemieux. In order to become the most successful player in the history of the North American League, Alexander Ovechkin needs to score more than two hundred goals. It is enough to score 75 goals to enter the top-3.
