Kiev needs to work more actively to investigate the case of journalist Kirill Vyshinsky, RIA Novosti cites Harlem Désir, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media. According to him, Ukrainian law enforcement agencies need to speed up the work. The international organization official recalled that Vyshinsky faced serious accusations and all the principles of law, necessity and proportionality should be observed.

Désir stressed that journalists have the right to freely express their own views including critical ones. Media may also cover controversial and even unpleasant issues. It is inadmissible to persecute journalists for their activities, he claims.

According to Russkiy Mir, the Ukrainian authorities accuse the editor of the RIA Novosti-Ukraine portal of treason and Donbass republics support. If the court finds him guilty, he faces up to fifteen years in prison.

Earlier diplomats called his arrest outrageous as he was detained under a false pretext. The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Sergei Lavrov, called Kiev’s actions unacceptable.
