The Latvian Parliament supported changes to the legislation, banning Russian cars from entering the territory of the country. The amendments passed their first reading in the Seimas, RIA Novosti reports. They involve the confiscation of cars that are registered in Russia if they are not re-registered in Latvia.

Car owners will have three months to re-register their cars in Latvia. Otherwise, cars will be confiscated. Riga is going to transfer the cars to Ukraine, their owners will be fined. Russian cars will be able to appear on Latvian roads only if they are in transit.

For the bill to come into force, the Seimas must support it in the 2nd - final - reading. It can come into force on November, 15.

As Russkiy Mir reported, earlier, the European Commission announced that cars with Russian license plates were banned from entering the EU territory. Smartphones, laptops, suitcases, cosmetics and other personal belongings can be confiscated.

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, called the EU’s actions racist.
