Poroshenko to notify Russia on Treaty on Friendship termination

The Ukrainian president plans to announce that the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Kiev and Moscow stops to operate, TASS reports. He promised to inform Russia by September 30.

The head of the state notes that the treaty is not terminated because it is a difficult and long procedure. The treaty simply ceases to operate, as it is expiring due to non-extension Earlier, the Ukrainian president said that he does not see much sense in this document.

Poroshenko said that the issue does not need to be approved by parliamentarians.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin said that he stands for revising the entire legal framework with Russia.

Moscow and Kiev inked the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership in 1997. The agreement reinforces the strategic partnership of the two countries. It lasts for ten years with automatic extension for further ten-year periods if neither of the sides decides otherwise.

As Russkiy Mir reported, Russian politicians are sure that the Kiev government again acts for its own destruction. Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Alexei Pushkov recalled that the very this document recognizes the territorial integrity and borders of Ukraine. If the treaty loses its force and ceases to operate Russia is automatically absolved from all obligations stipulated in it.
