Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed the hope that it would be possible to reach an agreement on the issue of common citizenship with the new Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports.

The head of state once again reminded that Russians and Ukrainians had a lot in common. Vladimir Putin repeatedly said that he considered Russians and Ukrainians to be one nation.

The Russian leader is confident that Russian residents and residents of Ukraine will benefit from a common citizenship.

If Kiev is going to issue passports to Russians, and Ukrainians receive Russian citizenship, then in the end it will turn out that everyone will have a common citizenship.

“This should be welcomed,” added the President and said goodbye to journalists in Ukrainian.

Russkiy Mir reported earlier that Russia might decide to simplify the process of obtaining a citizenship for Ukrainians. In response, Zelensky offered to grant Ukrainian citizenship to Russians.

The residents of Donbass are now able to get a Russian passport in a simplified procedure. The explanatory note to the document signed by Putin states that the decision is aimed at protecting human rights and is based on the principles of international law.
