17.07.2018

Chairman of the Committee on Education of the State Duma, Dean of the Moscow State University School of Public Administration, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Committee on BRICS Research Vyacheslav Nikonov summarizes Putin-Trump meeting in Helsinki.

Russian political scientist marked that both leaders called the talks successful. “Another measure of its success is how liberal US media behaves, because these media are 1) russophobic ; 2) they really speak out against Trump,” said the deputy.

Nikonov indicated that many critical developments and positive initiatives are going to follow: “First, arms control and international security. Putin said that both sides are interested in New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty continuation. It means that talks on this topic are going to be unfrozen first time in many decades.

Second, the cooperation in fighting terrorism, including cyber terrorism. Putin reminded of the Antiterror Working Group and about launching the joint structure that would take care of that issue.

Third, Syria. Putin was talking about Syrian crisis and common point of interests, creating common plans, realisation of the common strategy. Trump was raising same issues with more cautiousness, giving preference to the Israel security in this context. Trump said that the US and Russian militaries have gotten along better than political leaders for a number of years. It means that this interface exists, it works and to be developed further.”

According to the expert, Russian-American dialogue will advance in many directions. Trump now is the most powerful politician, according to Vyacheslav Nikonov. “Trump knows that he's not Putin's agent. He knows that Russian Special Services didn't meddle in the elections and didn't help him to become the US President,” said the Russian deputy.

“The world became a safer place. This meeting will enter the history books under the Helsinki spirit title,” concluded Vyacheslav Nikonov.
