Russia to develop Lunar-landing module

Development of a lander to drop off cosmonauts to the Moon has been started by Energy Rocket Space Corporation. Technical design of the takeoff and landing module is being worked out. The module will be delivered to the Lunar orbit by a heavy-lift launch vehicle, TASS informs. The plan is to put the module together at the Deep Space Gateway international circumlunar station.

The station will provide an opportunity to train main technological principles of placing the crew in the outer space. The first Lunar landings of automatic and well as pilot-controlled modules will become possible due to this station. Technologies and elements of the pilot-controlled fights to Mars will be studied as a part of this project as well.

The plan to develop the circumlunar station originated several years ago. Preparation for creation of the circumlunar infrastructure needed for implementation of plans by national space agencies started together with American Boeing corporation.

A year ago, Roscosmos and NASA claimed their plans of joint initiatives of developing the outer space including development of a cosmonaut-tended space station at the Lunar orbit.

The first landing of the Russian cosmonauts to the Moon, in accordance with the Rocket-space Corporation Energy documents, is targeted at 2030.
