Theaters from 13 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America presented performances in Moscow as part of the 16th Chekhov International Theater Festival, which lasted for more than four months - from May, 24 to October, 8, the website of the Russian Ministry of Culture reports.

The program included 15 theater productions from China, India, Brazil, Vietnam, Cuba, Chile, South Africa, Argentina, and the CIS countries. A wide variety of theatrical art from many parts of the world, from Chilean ethno-plastics to Vietnamese water puppet theater, were brought to Moscow.

The highlight of the festival was foreign performances based on Russian classics. The Brazilian troupe presented its interpretation of Chekhov's "Three Sisters", and the Armenian director Narine Grigoryan staged Turgenev's "Mumu" in a joint project of the Taganka Theater and the Chekhov Festival.

The largest event was the Cuban-Russian project “Carmina Burana”, which brought together over 200 actors, dancers and musical instrument performers on stage.

Festival events took place not only within the theaters, but also on street venues with free entry. Everyone could watch performances by foreign troupes and exhibitions about the history of the Chekhov Festival.

As in previous years, an extensive educational program for students, theater workers and spectators was held as part of the project in Moscow.

The 10th Laboratory of Young Directors of the CIS Countries was also held within the festival. Its participants from nine countries staged a multicultural performance dedicated to Chekhov.

The festival was organized with the support of the Russian Government, the Moscow Government, the Russian Ministry of Culture and the Moscow Department of Culture. The project is also supported by embassies, cultural centers and organizations of foreign countries.
