World-renowned conductor Temirkanov dies at 84

The famous conductor Yuri Temirkanov has passed away, Interfax reports. The artistic director of the St. Petersburg Academic Philharmonic died on Thursday, November, 2, at the age of 85.

Yuri Temirkanov was born in Nalchik, began studying music early, studied in Leningrad, where he graduated first from a music school, then from a conservatory.

His debut took place in 1965. For the first time, he took a place at the conductor's stand at the Leningrad Maly Opera and Ballet Theater with Verdi's opera La Traviata. Three years later he became artistic director of the Leningrad Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra.

For more than ten years he headed the Mariinsky theater. In the late eighties, he headed the symphony orchestra of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic.

Yuri Temirkanov was also popular abroad. He performed a lot with the most famous bands.
