The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, called Russian composers ''phenomenal'' and stated that culture must be respected, classicalmusicnews reports.

''I love a good opera. Mussorgsky is phenomenal, Tchaikovsky is also phenomenal. We must respect it,'' - she said, commenting on the Boris Godunov Opera's premiere at the La Scala theater.

Russkiy Mir reported that La Scala refused to follow the call of Ukraine's Consul General and cancel the performance of Boris Godunov. The theater called such a requirement unacceptable and shared plans for staging works by other Russian classics. The season started on December 7, the main role in Boris Godunov is performed by Russian singer Ildar Abdrazakov.

The musical director of the theater, Riccardo Chailly, spoke out against the "punishment of culture", which, in his opinion, should not be responsible for the current situation.
