The famous Italian theater La Scala opened the season with the Boris Godunov opera, despite the protests from Kyiv, RIA novosti reports.

Modest Mussorgsky's opera was broadcasted live by Rai1 and Rai3 TV channels.

The opening of the new season of the world famous theater is always one of the most important events in the musical life of Italy. This time the opera was staged by the Danish director Kasper Holten. Behind the conductor's stand was the chief conductor of the theater Riccardo Chailly. Russian singer Ildar Abdrazakov performed the main part.

Earlier, La Scala refused to follow the call of Ukraine's Consul General and cancel the performance of Boris Godunov. The theater called such a requirement unacceptable and shared plans for staging works by other Russian classics. Riccardo Chailly, spoke out against the "punishment of culture", which, in his opinion, should not be responsible for the current situation.

La Scala will also present performances of Tchaikovsky's ballets Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.
