Over the past two years, 170,000 compatriots from neighboring countries have become Russian citizens under a simplified procedure, the Sputnik Near Abroad telegram channel reports. The main department for migration of Russia's Ministry of Internal Affairs noted that for the most part these are representatives of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova and Ukraine.

According to Valentina Kazakova, who heads the department, over the past nine months, for the first time in three years, the number of Ukrainians who received Russian passports has decreased. But they still top the lists of foreigners who have become Russians.

After the new regions became part of Russia, more than 80,000 residents of the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions became Russian citizens.

In 2019, the President of the Russian Federation simplified the acquisition of Russian citizenship for the population of the DPR and LPR. Since then, more than a million residents of the people's republics had received Russian citizenship, Valentina Kazakova specified.
