New head of ROCOR takes office in New York

The enthronement of the new head of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR) took place the day before, on September 18, Interfax reports. The ceremony was held in the Cathedral of the Sign in New York.

Bishop Nicholas of Eastern America and New York, received the rank of metropolitan on Saturday, September 17. He was chosen on September 13 in New York as part of the ROCOR Council of Bishops.

The head of the Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill congratulated First Hierarch. 

Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York passed away on May 16. He died at the age of 74 in New York after a serious illness. In the office of ROCOR, Metropolitan Hilarion was called "a most benevolent archpastor and a kind Christian man."
