Residents of Latvia who are set to receive Russian citizenship will not be able to stay in the country, RIA Novosti reports. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Baltic Republic, Edgars Rinkevics, promised that Riga would even change the legislation for this. According to him, "newly minted Russian citizens" will not be given a residence permit.

Rinkevics added that these words can be regarded as a statement of principled position, which will be followed by formal actions.

More than 50,000 Russians live in Latvia.

Russian parliamentarians are going to explore the possibility of facilitating the procedure for obtaining Russian citizenship for compatriots living in the Baltic republics. According to State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, they also plan to make it easier for them to obtain a visa.
