The Russian women's water polo team won silver medals at the European Championships in Budapest. The Russians gave way to the Spanish team in the finals, but it could not spoil the triumph as they were the first medals in ten years. The team has also won itself a ticket to the Olympic Games, which will be held this summer in Japan, TASS reports.

The Russian team had excellent chances to win the European Championships and for the most part of the final meeting led in the long run but lost to the Spaniards in the end. The championship received a lot of attention as the winner was to get the Olympic license. Although the Russians became second, the ticket went to them, as the Spaniards won the right to participate in the Games at the 2019 World Cup. According to the results of the championship, the Russian national team scored the most goals, the Russian goalkeeper Anna Karnaukh was awarded a personal prize.

Experts called the success of the Russians in Hungary the return of the women's team to the number of the strongest teams in the world. The main achievements of the team are associated with 2000s, when the Russians won three European championships in a row.

The Russian men's team lost in the quarterfinals to the hosts of the championship.
