World celebrates Vladimir Nabokov’s 120th anniversary

Vladimir Nabokov's anniversary is celebrated on Monday, April 22. The famous writer was born in St. Petersburg, his father was a statesman. The future author of Protection of Luzhin, Masha, Invitations to Execution and many other works received an excellent education. Nabokov’s family left Russia after the October Revolution, and he spent his entire adult life in exile. The author continued to study and write in the UK. Until 1937 he lived in Berlin, where he earned his living by composing chess etudes for German newspapers. After that Nabokov was forced to leave Germany, fleeing from fascism.

Nabokov spent many years in the United States, where he taught Russian literature at the university, continued to write in English, translated works of Russian classics. Among his translations are The Word about Igor's Regiment, Pushkin's Eugene Onegin, Lermontov's Hero of Our Time, and other masterpieces of Russian literature.

Nabokov became world-famous thanks to Lolita. The novel dedicated to love for a young girl became known in the whole world and became a bestseller. The book was written in Russian and English.

The writer spent the last years of his life in Switzerland, where he was buried.
