Memorial to Soviet soldiers is desecrated in Gdansk

Unknown individuals desecrated the military cemetery in Gdansk, Poland, IA NewsBalt reports.

Soviet soldiers perished during the liberation of Poland from the Nazis are buried there. The vandals bent more than twenty metal stars set on the graves of fallen heroes.

The local police authorities are searching for the vandals. According to eyewitnesses, there were three of them. The crime was committed in broad daylight. Gdansk necropolis is one of the largest military burial sites in Poland. More than 2,500 Soviet soldiers are buried there.

Local officials stay in close cooperation with Russian diplomats are working to eliminate the damage caused to the memorial.

The Russian Foreign Ministry is convinced that there is a direct correlation between acts of vandalism which have become more frequent and the Polish authorities’ attempts to rewrite the WWII history and its results.
