The heads of the BRICS counties are concerned that the arms race may be transferred to the outer space, reports RIA News. This is what they claimed in their declaration at the BRICS summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. They say they are concerned that the space may turn into the territory of military opposition.

The document stresses that preventing arms race in the space will help to avoid a thread to global peace and safety.

It is crucial that all countries obey the existing international regulations, which provide for a peaceful use of the space. The participants are sure that it is necessary to consolidate and strengthen this format.

The countries' leaders welcome the Group of Government Expert that has recently started work. It's objective is to develop a binding legal document that would prevent the arms race.

The UN conference on disarmament is still the only forum, where parties discuss the disarmament. It is also important for the international agreement on the prevention of the arms race in the space in any form.

"Practical measures aimed at enhancing transparency and increasing trust may also stop countries from placing their arms in the space", stressed the BRICS countries' leaders.
