The last time a Russian won the title was in 1997, when Sergei Klevchenya recorded the best times, RIA Novosti reports.

The contest involved a combination of the results of two races – the 500 meter and 1000 meter. Pavel Kulizhnikov of Russia had the best time in both races, giving him a total of 138.325 points, which is a world record to date for this competition. He was followed by Hein Otterspeer of the Netherlands (139.335) and fellow Russian Alexei Yesin (139.855), who came in second and third, respectively.

Kulizhnikov’s lead over silver medal winner was just over one full point, which has only happened twice before in the history of the competition. The Russian skater, who turns 21 in April, also became the second-youngest world sprint champion since American Eric Heiden’s triumph in 1977.
