Restrictive measures adopted by the EU Council on March 15 against a number of Russians are aimed at punishing people for fulfilling their duty to protect Russian border with strict adherence to laws of the country and the international law. Such a statement is published on the website of Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Russian diplomats stress that the decision may be a public action to support the Ukrainian regime before presidential elections.

The pretext used by the European Union for inclusion Russians, who stopped the provocation organized by the leadership of Ukraine in November 2018, in the sanctions list, is striking with cynicism and hypocrisy. According to diplomats, the ships of Ukrainian fleet maneuvered dangerously and posed a threat to the movement of vessels. However, they ignored the legitimate demands of border guards. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that during the provocation, the ships illegally crossed the border in the place that was considered Russian territory before Crimea was incorporated into Russia.

Diplomats also refer to the testimony of Ukrainian sailors, who confessed that the breakthrough was a provocation and was carried out on the orders of their commanders. Based on the foregoing, border guards and FSB officers, who detained the violators, acted in strict accordance with Russian laws. The EU, by its actions, only encourages Kiev to continue the policy of provocations. This is irresponsible on the part of European countries, since such a policy threatens the security of the countries of Black Sea region, including the members of the European Union itself.

Russkiy Mir reported that Russia was the first to show interest in publicly considering the incident in Kerch Strait and convened the UN Security Council immediately after the Ukrainian provocation.

Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs saw disrespect for the country's right to protect its state border  in the EU sanctions and promised an adequate response.
