Iconostasis restored in St. Alexis Church – Monument of Russian Glory in Leipzig

Flickr/Kristina SavicRestoration of Iconostasis at St. Alexis Church – Monument of Russian Glory in Leipzig was completed, website of Raduga society reports. Six students from Moscow State Academic Art Institute named after Surikov were restoring the iconostasis for more than a year. They managed to restore around forty icons.

Staying of Russian specialists in Leipzig was partially financed by Kunstretter e. V. company for preserving art objects. Besides, the part of money for restoration of icons was collected at the expense of donations from local population.

Iconostasis of Leipzig Cathedral is 18 meters high. Its width is 10 meters. It is one of the largest iconostases in foreign Orthodox churches. A part of icons will be renovated later when the second session of restoration works begins.


St. Alexis Church – Monument of Russian Glory was founded in 1913 in commemoration of the Battle of the Nations, the largest battle of the Napoleon wars near Leipzig.
