Open Air Second World War Museum is to be built in Kuril Archipelago Shumsha, told the head of the regional division of Search Russian Movement Artyom Bandura.

According to Bandura, some of the future museum objects were discovered during the recent expedition. Japanese fortification artefacts, such as trenches and pillboxes were found on the island. Some of human-height trenches need to be recovered. Underground galleries and warehouses are in good condition.

All the works on the museum setting could be completed in 2018. Tourists will understand why it was so difficult to conquer the island because of the powerful fortification system, Bandera has added.

About 80,000 of Japanese Army soldiers and officers were deployed at the end of the Second World War to Shumsha. They have converted the island into an impenetrable fortress. Around 1000 Soviet soldiers were killed during bloody battles for this little piece of earth.
