International Museum Day widely celebrated in Russia

International Museum Day is celebrated on Thursday, May, 18, RIA Novosti reports. The initiative to establish this holiday came from the delegation of the Soviet Union during a meeting of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in the late 70s of the 20th century. Almost immediately, it began to be celebrated in more than 150 countries. More than 20,000 museums around the world join it.

For 30 years in a row, each holiday has been dedicated to a specific theme. This year's theme is Museums, Sustainability and Wellbeing.


The number of museums in Russia is approaching 3 thousand. Social research shows that their popularity in the country has increased 1,5 times over the past 30 years. In 2022, almost half of the surveyed said they had been to museums.

Traditionally, in honor of this holiday, the Museum Night in Moscow This year it is scheduled for May, 20. It will be held under the History and Stories motto. The emphasis will be made not only on the preservation of memory and spiritual and moral values, but also on personal stories about ancestors, mentors, heroes and events.

The Museum Night will be joined not only by museums, but also by libraries, parks and theaters. Several tours to be held by public persons.
