Leon Bakst, Costume design for 'Antigone': Créon

A week of Russian Fine Arts’ Sale started at the Christie's auction in London the day before, according to TASS. The top bid was a costume design by Leon Bakst. It was designed for Antigone’s performance based on Sophocles play and was sold for almost fifty thousand US dollars.

Summer Morning by Konstantin Somov was purchased for more than three hundred and sixty thousand US dollars. This price is four times more than its initial estimation. The Boy’s Portrait by Boris Grigoriev was sold for three hundred thirty thousand US dollars. This work appeared in the market for the first time.

According to the organizers, it was a quite successful auction. Three quarters of the bids found their new owners.

It should be reminded that the Week of Russian Auctions started on June, 5th. It is traditionally organized twice a year – at the beginning of summer and in the late autumn. Such auction houses as Christie's, Sotheby's, MacDougall's and Bonhams are taking part in it.

The most expensive bid of the Russian Week is represented by Sotheby's. The preliminary estimation of the artwork by celebrated painter Levitan amounts to two million US dollars.
