Igor Butman to organize International Jazz Day in Russia

02.05.2017

The most acclaimed jazz musicians took part at a large-scale Gala Concert, which became the final point of International Jazz Day. This year International Jazz Day was conducted in Havana, Cuba, TASS informs. Famed Russian saxophone player Igor Butman performed together with other jazz musicians on the stage of The Great Theatre of Havana. He found himself in a very dignified company of over a hundred jazz musicians from almost 15 different countries.

The audience met them and saw them off with loud applauses thanking the musicians profusely with standing ovations afterwards. The concert taking place in the Federico Garcia Lorca concert hall with capacity to accommodate 1,5 thousand people was broadcast on air at national television of Cuba.

As per Butman, Cuba was always known for its jazz traditions, that is why UNESKO supporting the International Jazz Day chose Havana as a place of its conduction for this reason.

“Jazz is a universal language facilitating the dialogue between cultures and leaving room for self-expression,” Director-General of UNECO Irina Bokova addressed the audience at The Great Theatre of Havana.

International Jazz Day was hosted by Washington last year, earlier the music festival was held in Istanbul, Paris and Osaka. Russia may become a place for its conduction next year.
