A remedy for the treatment of coronavirus infection has developed in Russia, according to RIA Novosti. It was represented by the Federal Biomedical Agency (FMBA).

According to the agency, the drug is based on mefloquine, a medicine designed to treat malaria. The research and development center Pharmzashchita used the experience of China and France when developing the drug.

According to Veronika Skvortsova, the head of FMBA, the drug with high selectivity blocks the cytopathic effect of the coronavirus in cell culture and prevents its replication, and the immunosuppressive effect of mefloquine prevents the activation of the inflammatory response caused by the virus. She noted that the addition of macrolide antibiotics and synthetic penicillins not only prevents the formation of a secondary bacterial-viral syndrome, but also allows to increase the concentration of antiviral agents in blood plasma and lungs.

The head of the agency is sure that the drug will be very effective in treating patients infected with COVID-19 of different degrees and severity.

An effective and safe scheme for the prevention of the new coronavirus is being developed on the basis of mefloquine. The FMBA proposed to add the scheme to the methodological recommendations of the Ministry of Health.
