Golden Mask theater festival started in Moscow

Sixty-two performances from 21 cities of Russia will be brought to the Moscow public as part of the 26th Golden Mask Theater Festival. The shows will be held from January 25 to April 14, winners in various categories will be announced on April 15 at a ceremony in the Zaryadye concert hall, the website of the Russian Ministry of Culture reports.

The competition program will open with a Stilyagi musical by Alexey Frandetti on the stage of the Theater of Nations. The leading theaters of Moscow and St. Petersburg will compete for the victory in dramatic performances category. The Chekhov Moscow Art Theater claims the main prize with its Seryozha play based on Leo Tolstoy’s novel Anna Karenina.

Performances of theaters from Novosibirsk, Krasnodar, Perm and other cities of Russia are presented in the small form nomination.

The title of the best opera production is by the Bolshoi Theater, the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theater, and the Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theater.

A number of theaters were first nominated for the leading theater award in Russia. Among them are puppet theaters from Tolyatti and Yoshkar-Ola, the Arkhangelsk Youth Theater, as well as theaters from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Kirov, Petrozavodsk and other cities.
