An international conference dedicated to the work of Anton Chekhov started on Friday, January 24 at the writer’s former country estate Melikhovo, which is now a museum. The Bakhrushinsky Theater Museum and the Chekhov Commission under the Council for the History of World Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the support of the Russkiy Mir Foundation act as its organizers.

The forum called Chekhov: Texts and Contexts (the Heritage of Chekhov in World Culture) is dedicated to the writer's anniversary. This year marks the 160th anniversary of his birth. Scientists from Russia, Bulgaria, France, the USA, Greece, Israel and other countries gathered at the writer's estate.

The conference is aimed at consolidating the members of the international scientific community of Chekhov researchers. In addition, it will provide an idea of the state of Russian and foreign studies of Chekhov. Forum participants will also identify promising areas in the study of Chekhov’s heritage. They will try to find answers to some questions about Chekhov texts and the focus of their studies today. The way Russian and foreign theater and the modern art generally interpret the writer’s works will also be discussed.
