Last French veteran of Normandie-Niemen regiment passed away

The last French veteran of the Normandie-Niemen regiment Andre Peyronie died on December 10 in France, TASS reported. Peyronie was an aircraft mechanic during the war years. He was 99.

The Russian Embassy expressed condolences on behalf of the Russian people to the relatives and friends of the veteran. Diplomats thanked the French friend for his feat.

The Normandie-Niemen regiment was created during the war in the USSR, it is the most order-bearing regiment in France. The squadron was formed at the height of the war on the initiative of the leader of the French Resistance General Charles de Gaulle. On the Eastern Front, Normandie-Neman participated in major battles. The air unit made more than five thousand sorties, conducted about nine hundred air battles. Forty-two pilots of the regiment died in the battle. Four officers were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
