A commemorative action dedicated to the feat of Soviet soldiers who died during the liberation of European countries from Nazi occupation began in Slovakia, TASS reports. A handful of land will be collected from military burials, placed in soldier's pouches and delivered to Russia. Then the soil in shells from ballistic projectiles will be placed in the Main Church of the Russian Army.

According to the Russian Embassy, the action started in the city of Michalovce. The soil was taken at the Central War Memorial Cemetery. More than seventeen thousand soldiers and officers of the Red Army, who in bloody battles freed the country from fascist invaders in 1944, were buried there. The memorial at the place of their burial appeared four years later.

Participants in the commemorative action were representatives of the local administration, schoolchildren and Russian diplomats. The Orthodox priest held a memorial service. In battles with the Nazis in Slovakia, more than sixty-three thousand Red Army soldiers gave their lives. Memorial ceremonies are planned at their burial places in Bratislava, the cities Trebisov, Kosice, Swidnik, Zvolen, Brezno, Zilina and Shturovo.

Similar actions are held in other countries where Soviet soldiers who fell in battles against fascism during the Second World War are buried.
