Russian director Vladimir Menshov celebrates his 80th birthday

Russian director Vladimir Menshov celebrates his birthday on Tuesday, September 17, TASS reports. The laureate of the State Prize of the Soviet Union and the Oscar turns 80 years old. According to the hero of the day, he does not plan any magnificent celebrations. He wants a modest holiday with the family, the director explains. He added that it was hard to get used to the idea that he was already past 80.

Menshov is currently working on a documentary about the centenary of the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography, where he once studied himself. The director did not go into details but expressed the hope that the documentary would be screened at the gala evening, which should be held in late September.

The work of Vladimir Menshov is very popular. He is accounted for about a hundred memorable film roles, as well as a number of excellent films he directed. Including the Oscar-winning Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears, Love and Doves, What a Mess! (Shirli-myrli), Envy of the Gods and others.

Love and Doves is recognized as the most popular Soviet film. It exceeded twenty million views on YouTube. The audience called the feature the best comedy, and Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears - the best melodrama.

Menshov admitted that the love of the viewers mattered the most for him. “I am happy that my features are still loved,” he said. 

The main roles were played by Menshov’s wife Vera Alentova in three of his features. The daughter of director and actor Julia Menshova became a TV presenter, she also starred in films and TV shows.
