Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the outstanding Russian figure skater, three-time Olympic champion Irina Rodnina, on her 70th birthday. In a congratulatory telegram, the text of which is published on the President’s website, Putin mentioned her achievements in sport and work in parliament.

Rodnina won Olympic awards and ten gold medals of the world championships. For more than ten years, the Soviet figure skater was the undisputed leader in world figure skating. She left sports at the peak of her achievements - after the 1980 Moscow Olympics, Zvezda TV channel reports.

After almost a quarter century, Irina Rodnina returned to the Olympic arena - together with Vladislav Tretyak she took part in the ceremony of lighting the Olympic flame of the Sochi Games in 2014. After completing her sports career, Rodnina worked as a trainer. Twelve years ago she became a deputy.

Vladimir Putin’s congratulation notes that the sport has tempered Irina Rodnina, taught her to go towards her goals with complete dedication and courage. These qualities have become popular in the parliamentarian work.
