Historical exchange: 35 previously detained citizens of Russia and Ukraine returned to their families

Thirty-five Russians and as many Ukrainians returned to their families. This was made possible thanks to the simultaneous release of the convicted and detained Russians and Ukrainians, which was carried out by Russia and Ukraine.

The action is called historical, and experts see it as the first evidence of a transition to a dialogue between countries, RIA Novosti reports.

Russian ombudswoman Tatiana Moskalkova was the one who informed that the exchange had taken place and 35 people from each side had crossed the border in opposite directions. She called the incident a new page in relations between Russia and Ukraine.

Moskalkova emphasized that the active study of the possibility of mutual release began after a telephone conversation between the leaders of the two countries. She added that legal work on the cases of convicts continued.

Russian President’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the Kremlin welcomed the exchange and were glad that Russian citizens had returned home.

Journalist Kirill Vyshinsky, who passed a year and three months in a Ukrainian prison, where among those who were sent to Moscow. He assured that he was ready to come to Kiev for court hearings.  Twenty-four sailors, who took part in a provocation in the Kerch Strait, organized by the previous Ukrainian leadership, were also liberated by Moscow and sent to Ukraine.
