The next round of the Russian-German Petersburg Dialogue forum opens on Thursday, July 18, TASS reports. It is held in the German city of Petersberg, located near Bonn, under the slogan "Cooperation as a keynote of peace in Europe: the contribution of civil societies in Russia and Germany."
18th session of the non-governmental association will gather about 300 people from both countries. Sessions are held annually, they are hosted by Russia and Germany in turn.
This year it is planned to discuss important topics on the international agenda, public life, and the economic sphere. Discussions will be held in the framework of working groups: “Politics”, “Economy”, “Mass Media”, “Civil Society”, “Education and Science”, “Culture”, “Workshop of the Future”, “Churches in Europe”, “Ecological Modernization” and "Social Health".
A meeting of the Russian and German Foreign Ministers Sergey Lavrov and Heiko Maas and a joint press-conference is also to take place.
Within the framework of the forum, the Peter Benich Award ceremony will take place. It celebrates the work of journalists on various aspects of bilateral cooperation. The award bears the name of the first co-chairman of Petersburg Dialogue on the German side, the patriarch of German journalism. He passed away in 2005.
Note that the Civil Society Forum of the two countries was initiated almost two decades ago by Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. A key task throughout all the years of its existence was the creation of a solid foundation for bilateral relations. Petersburg Dialogue is also supported by Chancellor Angela Merkel.
