Russian diplomats took part in the opening ceremony of the renovated graves of Soviet soldiers who died during the war in the United States. Their graves are located in Alaska, near the city of Anchorage, on the territory of the Fort Richardson National War Memorial, TASS reports. Nine pilots, who died during the flight of aircraft from the USA to the Soviet Union, are buried there.

Two soldiers who died in 1945, and other two, presumably, civilians, rest in the same place.

According to the director of the memorial, Virginia Walker, corrections were made in the memorial inscriptions during the renovation of the tombstones as inaccuracies in names and military ranks had been made during the funeral. The Russian Cultural Center and local organizations helped clarify information in the archives.

Anyone who wants to praise the memory of the victims knows that during the Second World War our countries were allies, Walker added. She expressed the hope that in the future we would return to this status.

The head of the Russian embassy Anatoly Antonov, in turn, recalled the importance of preserving the memory of those times. The diplomat is sure that it is necessary to convey to the public information that the two countries were able to accomplish 75 years ago by joining forces.

During the war, the US gave to the USSR eight thousand aircraft, it involved three hundred pilots. Today the world is in a difficult situation, the ambassador added. But he has no doubt that the time will come, and it will become clear to everyone that the United States and Russia need to act together.
