Moscow urged Kiev to find and punish those responsible for the demolition of the monument to Marshal Zhukov in Kharkov, TASS reports. According to the representative of Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, our country is not indifferent to the fate of the symbols of the heroic pages of the common history of two nations.

The Ukrainian authorities should assess the incident properly, stop indulging the radicals and nationalists and take measures to protect objects of common cultural and historical heritage, the foreign ministry stressed.

Zakharova called the desecration of the monument "another barbaric act."

The bust of the great commander was destroyed by the nationalists during a protest against the congress of regional authorities. Several hundred people participated in it under the slogans of the nationalists.

The police preferred to stay aside.

The main goal of this action was not only intimidation, but also verification of Ukrainian civil society and new authorities “against immunity to the virus of nationalism,” Zakharova said. Mass responses have shown that most of Ukrainians spoke out sharply against such acts of vandalism.

At the same time, the reaction of Kiev officials, who called this case an internal affair, is surprising, Zakharova added.
