A group of Russian schoolchildren arrived in Japan, RIA Novosti reports. Sixty people living in Kuril Islands arrived to Hokkaido Island within the frameworks of visa-free exchanges. Most of them are young people aged 12 to 17 years.

They will visit Kanagawa Prefecture and attend a tour of the historical sights of the ancient city of Kamakura. They will also meet with local students.

The trip will continue until May 28, when the children will return to Kuril Islands. The day before, they will come to Hokkaido again.

Visa-free exchange between residents of Russian southern Kuriles and Japan started in the early 90’s of the last century. Moscow and Tokyo agreed that they would help improve mutual understanding between Japanese and Russian peoples. Visa is not required to travel on mutual exchanges. Two years ago, guests in Japan and the Kuril Islands began traveling by charter planes. Previously, they had to travel by sea.
