The city of Anchorage (Alaska state, US) will host the Immortal Regiment action for the first time this year, TASS reports. Russian compatriots living in Alaska also dream to install a monument in honor of the anti-Hitler coalition during the World War II.

According to the coordinator of the movement in Anchorage, Gennady Polikakhin, it would be great to immortalize the memory of Soviet and American soldiers who fought together against the Nazis. The town has a memorial to those who died during the war, he explains, but, unfortunately, there is no mention of the Russians there.

Polikakhin added that the initiative group planned to propose the town authorities to support the project of the monument, which perpetuated the friendship of different nations in World War II.

The monument is supposed to represent figures of soldiers from the armies of different countries who stand embracing each other. The monument needs to be realistic, because then the Americans will be able to experience history, see it with their own eyes, Polikakhin believes.

He also said that about fifty people would walk to the war memorial with portraits of their ancestors along the main streets of Anchorage on May 5. Immigrants from Russia and other Soviet republics will take part in the event. American veterans will accompany them.

For the small local community the Immortal Regiment plays an important role of uniting Russian-speaking residents of the town, who usually do not communicate.

As the relations between Moscow and Washington are far from the best, the organizers want to remind the Americans that there was a time when the two nations were united by the same goal. It is a pity that a lot of contemporaries do not remember that.

Note, that this year the Immortal Regiment would take place in twenty-five American cities. Santa Barbara, Cincinnati, Charleston, as well as Anchorage, will host the Immortal Regiment for the first time.
