Russian book union (RBU) asked UNESCO and other international organizations to assure the Kiev (это не ошибка, но мы пишем Kiev) authorities to abandon restrictions against Russian publishing houses and online bookstores, reports Medusa news agency.

A few days ago, the Ukrainian authorities imposed new Russian sanctions. Almost eight hundred and fifty people and about three hundred legal entities came under additional personal restrictions. Among them are the largest Russian publishers.

Earlier, the RBU said that Kiev has virtually banned the import of Russian-produced books into the territory of Ukraine. RBU is confident that in this way the authorities are crudely violating the rights of Ukrainian citizens to access legal book content. In addition, the ban is aimed at extrusion the Russian language "from the cultural and moral field." At the same time, more than half of the inhabitants of the neighbouring country choose to read books printed in Russian.

In addition, as a result of new sanctions in Ukraine, piracy will seriously increase and the share of counterfeit books will increase. Kiev’s actions are contrary to the Bern Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, and also contrary to the Florence Agreement. In this document, the countries of the United Nations set the rules for the importation of educational, scientific and cultural materials. Culture should remain above politics, and this thesis has been repeatedly showcased in international professional forums, HRC statement said.
