Battleship Potemkin turns 95: festive rating of most popular Soviet films

Battleship Potemkin by Sergei Eisenstein celebrates its 95th anniversary, Slovodel website informs. This movie became the starting point of people’s new perception and attitude to cinematography. 

The filming took only 4 month. For the past century, Battleship Potemkin strongly keeps its status of the most entitled Russian movie. The film critics called it the best film of all times in 50’s. Twenty years later, it took the first place in Top 100 best movies. Ten years ago, the work of Sergei Eisenstein was included in Top 15 movies that had the most significant impact on world cinema.

The rating of Soviet films that are most popular on the West was compiled for Battleship Potemkin’s anniversary. Stalker by Andrei Tarkovsky took the first place in it. Elem Klimov’s Come and See war drama is in second place. Solaris by Tarkovsky was the third. 

The list includes other works by this filmmaker, such as Nostalghia, Andrei Rublev, Mirror and The Sacrifice. The Irony of Fate by Eldar Ryazanov, War and Peace by Sergei Bondarchuk and Battleship Potemkin have also entered the rating.
