15.01.2019

Cecilia Ode, an outstanding Russianist, Doctor of philology, professor, Senior Scientist of the Institute of Theoretical Language Sciences and the Institute of Phonetic Sciences of the University of Amsterdam, member of the Presidium of International Association of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature (MAPRYAL), passed away after a long-term illness on January 9.

She was one of the brightest scientists of modern humanitarian knowledge. For many years, Cecilia Ode was studying the language and life of Yukaghir people in Siberia. Dutch linguist specialized in ethno-linguistics and problems of endangered languages. She was also interested in filming and photography. She was researching Paleo Siberian languages at the International Institute for Asian Studies in Leiden University and the University of Amsterdam.

Cecilia Ode worked actively on the studies of rare languages of Russia. She gathered a unique collection of linguistic and folk materials about the language and culture of Siberian native peoples. The book named At Yukaghirs’, which was released in 2018, has become an amazing tangible representation of the disappearing culture. Cecilia Ode was going on expeditions for months through extreme cold in winter and stifling heat in summer.

Лингвист неоднократно принимала участие в Ассамблеях Русского мира, которые ежегодно проводит фонд «Русский мир». В прошлом году за заслуги в деле сближения и взаимообогащения культур Сесилия Оде была награждена медалью Пушкина.

The linguist repeatedly attended the Russkiy Mir Assemblies, held by Russkiy Mir Foundation annually. Last year she was awarded the Medal of Pushkin for achieving the cultural convergence and enrichment.
