One more church belonging to the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church was taken over, Rossiyskaya Gazeta informs. Unknown persons attacked the St.Nicholas Church in Zhytomyr district.

According to the UOC priest Pavel Linnik, a group of people broke into the church and started threatening clergymen and worshipers. Local authorities and members of Svoboda nationalist party were leading the attackers.

Note, for the past four years, more than 50 churches belonging to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchate have been taken over. According to Antony, Metropolitan of Borispol and Brovary, members of radical nationalist unions take part in the raids.

As Russkiy Mir informed earlier, the “unification council” was held in Kiev on December 15, 2018 on the initiative of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Constantinople Patriarch Bartholomew. It was attended mostly by the representatives of two non-canonical structures; “Kiev Patriarchate” and Ukrainian Autonomous Orthodox Church. Patriarch Bartholomew handed over a tomos to the new church structure on January 6. The Russian Orthodox Church, the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church and most of the other Orthodox churches have refused to recognize the “new church”, considering its creation no-canonical.

ROC also broke off contact with Constantinople Patriarchate and called the day when the tomos was signed a tragic one for the global Orthodoxy.
