Foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Lavrov and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Taro Kono had a meeting in Moscow on Monday, where they started the negotiation about the peace treaty between the countries, Kommersant reports.

According to Sergey Lavrov, Russian-Japanese relations are gaining speed, and the trade and economic cooperation is developing further.

At the same time, Moscow and Tokyo still have substantial differences with regard to the peace treaty. As Sergey Lavrov noted, Russia does not intend to discuss its sovereignty over Kuriles; moreover, it is expecting Tokyo to recognize the Russian sovereignty. According to Foreign Minister, both parties are prepared to work on the basis of 1956 declaration, “that first of all means the indispensable value of the first step; Japan’s recognition of the results of World War II  in its entirety, including Russian sovereignty over all South Kuril Islands.”

Russia is expecting the visit of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in the end of January. Abe plans to discuss the conclusion of the peace treaty between the countries with the Russian President.
