Russian citizen Maria Butina, who awaits the court hearing in an American prison, has allegedly agreed to plead guilty, TASS reports. According to one of American TV-channels, she plans to cooperate with the investigation. The journalists claim that they possess the documents prepared for the court.

According to the documents, Butina would admit that she had been acting overseas under the supervision of a certain Russian official. She signed the agreement at the end of last week, the channel claims.

If this information is correct, she might face a five-year prison sentence. The court may mitigate the sentence if Butina agrees to cooperate with the authorities. She can be deported to Russia after that.

Yesterday Butina’s lawyers and the US attorney’s office filed a joint petition for holding a hearing on the deal between Butina and federal prosecutors. The trial is to take place on Wednesday, December 12.

The Russian President’s Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the reporters that the Kremlin could not confirm Butina’s decision to make a deal with the investigation.

Russkiy Mir reported earlier the Russian woman to have been detained in Washington on suspicion of illegal activities in the interests of a Russian official who was on the sanction list. Butina had pleaded non-guilty on the accusation.

Moscow called the accusations preposterous. Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that Butina’s arrest was needed to negate the positive effect that the Russian and American presidents had achieved at the summit in Helsinki.
