Russian universities are chosen by 5% of students from different countries of the world. The same number of applicants choose the French universities as Russia and France share the 5th and the 6th placeб according to the data on student mobility collected by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics.  The USA, Great Britain, Australia and Germany also made the top-5 of the list. Almost a half of students who prefer to study abroad choose universities in these countries, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports.

Russian universities has been moving higher in the international ratings in recent years and this progress corresponds with Development of the Export Potential of the Russian Education System state program. The program presupposes that the number of foreign students in Russian universities will reach 700 hundred thousand people in seven years. The income of universities and the country from the admission of foreign students should increase to four hundred billion rubles. The project 5-100, aimed at increasing the attractiveness of Russian education abroad, is successfully implemented.

The popularity of Russian universities among foreigners is constantly growing. According to the data for 2016, the number of foreign students in Russian universities exceeded 300 hundred thousand people, Russia’s income from attracting foreign citizens to full-time university increased six times over the past twelve years. The impressive numbers were reached thanks to agreements on mutual recognition of diplomas between Russia and several countries in Europe, South and North America and Africa.

The most popular disciplines are engineering and medicine. Nearly half of foreign students choose to study them.
