Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s century-old anniversary is celebrated across the globe on Tuesday, December 11, reports TASS reports.

About sixty scientists from eleven countries participate in the science conference timed to this date. Alexander Solzhenitsyn: A Look from the 21st Century Forum started work in the Russian State Library and in the House of The Russian Abroad. The conference was opened by the writer's widow Natalya Solzhenitsyna.

The head of the Federal Agency for Press Mikhail Seslavinsky stressed the importance of studying the writer’s legacy. The participants of the conference plan to discuss several themes including "Solzhenitsyn as a researcher of Russian revolutions", "Solzhenitsyn as an artist. Traditions and Innovation", "Solzhenitsyn's Publicism on the Eternal and Topical Issues" and many more.

A monument to the famous author is to be unveiled in Moscow on the anniversary day.

Alexander Solzhenitsyn was born in Kislovodsk and graduated from Moscow Institute of Philosophy, Literature and History. At the beginning of WWII he went to the front line and served as an artilleryman. In early 1945 he was arrested for criticizing the Soviet authorities and spent eight years in camps. Life in custody is described in many of his books. In the seventies, he was stripped of Soviet citizenship and left the Soviet Union to return to Russia only in the 90-s.

Russkiy Mir reported a memorial sign to have been installed on the house where the writer lived in honor of the anniversary. The sign appeared on house 12, building 8, Tverskaya Street, Moscow at the end of last year – in this very building the writer was arrested just before his departure for exile. A memorial museum will soon start working in his apartment. The museum of Solzhenitsyn will also appear in Ryazan.

The virtual museum of the writer was created at Southern Federal University. The Alexander Solzhenitsyn and Rostov-on-Don exposition tells the story of the time Solzhenitsyn spent in this southern city.

The legacy of the writer was discussed at a round table at UNESCO. It is also planned to release a collection of historical documents related to his name.

The centenary of Alexander Solzhenitsyn was celebrated in Paris by an international symposium. The memorial evening was held in the American town of Cavendish (Vermont state), where the Nobel Prize winner lived for eighteen years.
