The deputies of Verkhovna Rada upheld the decision to terminate the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership with Russia, RIA Novosti reports. The required minimum of votes was exceeded by 50 as 277 deputies voted for this decision. Ukraine’s Petro Poroshenko introduced the draft law on the termination of the treaty to the parliament at the beginning of the week. With all formalities observed the treaty will be terminated on April 1.

Russkiy Mir reported earlier that Kiev to have announced the decision to abandon the Treaty on Friendship. Ukrainian authorities also intend to terminate about 40 different treaties with Russia. According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin, Kiev wants to do it unilaterally. By today almost 50 agreements with Moscow have already been “killed”, the minister added. Klimkin is convinced that this process could go faster but the government should act with caution as the abandonment of some treaties could have negative effects on Ukrainian citizens.

The Foreign Ministry reviews the entire database of documents relating to relations with Russia. All agreements signed before 2014 no longer makes sense today, the minister thinks.

The number of treaties between Moscow and Kiev totals almost 400 documents. Some of them were suspended when the conflict in the Donbas started and the Crimea became a part of Russia. Klimkin thinks that Kiev does not need diplomatic relations with Moscow. They would certainly have been terminated if not for millions of Ukrainians at the territory of Russia. The number of border crossings between the two states increases all the time.
