Russian Tretyakov Gallery marks 125 anniversary

The Tretyakov Gallery celebrated its anniversary on August 15, the Russian Ministry of Culture reports. On this day 125 years ago first visitors entered the gallery built by Russian merchant and philanthropist Pavel Tretyakov. Two thousand art pieces, including paintings, sculptures and icons collected by Pavel Tretyakov and his brother were on display 125 years ago. 

The museum funds are being fulfilled up till now. There are paintings and drawings of Russian artists, sculptures, a valuable archive of manuscripts. The collection of ancient Russian art and icons is so far one of the best in the world.

The modern Tretyakov Gallery consists of seven museum buildings where permanent and temporary exhibitions are open. Every year 1.5 million people visit the museum. Its funds store almost 2000 pieces of art.

According to the Director General Zelfira Tregulova the new season is dedicated to the anniversary.

In September a new exhibition "Representing Russia" to be launched in Zaryadie park. The works showing the natural diversity of our country will be displayed to public. For the first time Zaryadie will become an exhibition platform for the Tretyakov Gallery.

Then Not Everyone Will Be Taken Into the Future exhibition of conceptual artists Ilya and Emilia Kabakovy to open at the New Tretyakov Gallery (Krymsky Val, 10). This is Kabakovs debut at the Tretyakov Gallery and the first display of the artist's retrospective in Moscow. The London Tate Modern Gallery and the Hermitage will participate it.

The same site will hold an exhibition of Mikhail Larionov, an outstanding Russian artist of the early 20th century. Visitors will see the first in its history major retrospective of the artist.

At the beginning of October the Engineering Building (Lavrushinsky Lane) will present the works of the famous Russian landscape painter Arkhip Kuindzhi.
