Latvian human rights’ defender Alexander Gaponenko stays in custody

Latvian human rights’ defender Alexander Gaponenko stays in custody. Relevant decision was taken by the court in the Latvian capital. This decision is final and not subject to appeal, informed Alla Berezovskaya on her Facebook page. 

According to the  Gaponenko's layer Imma Jansone, there are no legal grounds to keep her client under arrest. She has noted that the Congress of Non-citizens leader didn't expect to be released but was hoping for the best. The layer presumes that Gaponenko may bring the matter to the European Court of Human Rights.

The arbitration process was carried out behind closed doors. Allies and colleagues came to show the support. 

Let us remember, Alexander Gaponenko was detained by the Security Police of Latvia. He he is facing far-fetched allegations of anti-state activities. Gaponenko faces up to 8 years' imprisonment.

Russian Foreign Ministry is sure that Riga’s actions violate the international legislation. According to the Head of Department for Relations with Compatriots Abroad Oleg Malginov, Riga’s actions contradict basic principles of the European Union and infringe the human rights and the rights of national minorities.

Alexander Gaponenko endures pour conditions of the Latvian prison. Many rallies in support of the Human rights defender took place all over the world.
